The Zachman enterprise framework was invented by John Zachman in for The Zachman framework provides a means of classifying an organisation's.

Until I took the Zachman EA 4 day class, I didn't realize that all I had been doing was drawing incomplete views, since I didn't truly understand the relationships and the real impact to an organization of making a change to an architecture element.

Zachman Framework Training

This class has shown me the importance of getting down to the "brass tacks" of an EA, namely the Zachman primitives and their relationships. I now realize that I have not been truly been doing EA up to this point, since I have not been identifying the organization's primitives!

Mike Robison 26 April The Zachman Framework training enabled me to fully understand the power of this framework the ontology. The fundamentals of this framework will help me to re engineer Enterprises and solve business problems in the shortest possible time. As a free-lance Enterprise Architect my customers will benefit the knowledge and Case studies John and Sunil shared with us.

The Zachman Framework Evolution (Part 1)

Here is a brief trip down its historical evolution Notice it has only 3 Columns. These notations were the best available at the time as John was formulating what Architecture was relative to Enterprises.

John would later realize that these notations or models of The Framework were representations of "Composite" constructs in the Enterprise Architecture. More on this later John used this graphic until he retired from IBM in John would later remove this because this representation is a composite view of that particular cell. The "diamond" is a representation of a process a verb connecting two entities nouns , which violates the later-developed fundamental Framework rule that cells can only contain primitive constructs, not composites i.

This is a perfect example of what we would call a composite model today, not a primitive model. These are also a composite view because of the vertical arrows.

These are not pure, primitive models. The Figure 4 artist's rendition is fairly close to John's original graphic.

Note that John added the words 'Owner', 'Designer', and 'Builder' to Rows 2, 3, and 4 for clarification. He felt convinced that people would be more willing to accept his ideas about "Enterprise" Architecture as opposed to "Information Systems" Architecture.

The Figure 5 version is still a minor carry-over from the article as it only has 3 columns. Notice that this version is the first to use the adjectives 'Contextual', 'Conceptual', 'Logical', 'Physical', and 'Out-of Context' when defining the Rows.

There were some minor problems with this Framework which were actually rooted back from its inception.

This is still a composite model — the diamond indicates a process or verb hard-bound in the Inventory thing model, making that model totally inflexible. Each of these models was changed in later versions to better support the "Primitive" model concept John had conceived.John P.

Frameworks & Metamodels

Common nouns imply you have a set, which can be counted. Aside from this, however, this version did mark some very significant changes that John was pleased about.

Because of the predominate use of color in each Row, this Framework illustration emphasizes the Integration concept of the Rows. The TOGAF standard also provides guidance on a process that can be followed to identify and establish an appropriate architecture capability.

I now realize that I have not been truly been doing EA up to this point, since I have not been identifying the organization's primitives!
